While translating Eileens article "Leader of the pack" into German language, I digged deep into research and weird theories about dominance and packleading myths. Also about the therm "alpha" in relation to wolf and dog behaviour - I can tell you, this is a crazy world and people - mostly so called dogtrainer - have crackbrained thoughts and ideas about behaviour.

What I learned today:

My "pack" is a totally mess, cause I am not their leader - well, shit could happen, couldn't it?
My young dog Scooby is seeking higher status all the day, by pulling on lead, not listening, stealing food and by choosing the sofa for his nap.
Also shocking, my old girl Bao is doing the same since eight years now, without me noticing.
During training both dogs showed dominant behaviour, because they did not do as being told (well, maybe my handsign was not clear enough, but that's to easy, isn't it?)
After a long day in dogcare, Bao is nudging my husband steadily to be petted - seeking for comfort and someone to cuddle with is definitely dominant behaviour.
I am the happiest girl in the world, because I share my life with self-conscious and gentle dogs, which make their own decisions and are reliable in every way. They make mistakes, sure but so do I.

Well, what a amazing experiment of the Emory Center of Neuropolicy! And also a very impressive example of what dogtrainers and their dogs are able to do.

For us a lot changed since the beginning of the year. Luckily, almost everything changed for the better, but only almost. After the annual health check, it was clear that Tyson is not only getting old, but also that he has arthritis, fortunately not very bad, but it was clear that first puts an end to the long hikes in the mountains. Now what? We wanted to continue to be together on the road, like for day trips or even on vacation. The alternative for us is the bike! With a suitable dog trailer we can make long distances without the dogs have to overexert themselves. Bao may choose whether she wants to run or to sit in the trailer in the future. Tyson will spend most of his time in the trailer, because we want to protect his joints as much as possible.

Yesterday it was time! We have picked up the doggy rides in Bad Säckingen in Astor's Hütte. All our thanks go to Mrs. Henning and her husband, who have taken much time for consultation and could really answer any question about the dog trailer competently. We particularly liked that Bao and Tyson were allowed to try out their private dog trailer.

Nosework, Lost-retrieve, Tracking - What does that mean? Is my dog able to do that, too?

Friday ist Noseday! New classes start from Friday, 13th 2012.

14:30 - 16:00 hrs belongs to the young and wild, all Youngsters are welcome. The mild weather gives us a good opportunity to start Nosework.

16:30 - 18:00 hrs is reserverd for the "Oldies". This class is a special arrangement for older dogs.

The foretaste of spring

We can discuss the sense and nonsense of harness, and there are a plenty of articles and studies, which are pro or con about their use, with regards to health and training.

But it is not all about studies and theory, it is about reality, and our relationship with our dogs. Do I really have more control with a collar? If I choose a harness, am I relying on my dogs cooperation, since I can no longer use the leash to apply pressure?

But whether you choose harness of collar, the ring is for adjusting the leash, and no more! Education means training without coercion, and without correction using the leash.

I much prefer to wear a backpack than a bag over my shoulder - and the weight of a carabiner is took much for a lot of dogs. This is solved by using a harness. It is important to me that the leash is not disturbing the dog by dangling at his leg and shoulder. If you adjust the leash at the collar, you have to hold it short, and in this case you introduce the dog to pulling.

New classes start on March, 5th 2012

We will start every class with a meeting in gemuetlicher atmosphere, some theory and a walk to get to know each other on the afternoon of the first class day or according to prior agreement on a Saturday afternoon. This will take about three hours.

Well, more than twenty Dog Trainers are working in my area right now - why should I open up a my own business? There is one easy answer; I always wanted a place where people with dogs can learn, work and have fun together, where issues or handicaps of dogs or owners do not make any difference to their Trainer. So, this year I will bring this idea to life.

Based on your and your dogs abilities, you will get the chance to discover your dogs nose, his working skills and also his sense of humor.
